Generative AI has rapidly emerged as a contentious and transformative force in Hollywood, impacting job roles and compensation, and playing a pivotal role in recent writer and actor strikes as well as IATSE negotiations. According to a survey by Variety Intelligence Platform (VIP+) and HarrisX, generative AI is anticipated to significantly alter various creative roles in the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. Animators, VFX artists, game developers, voice actors, and storyboard artists are among those expected to experience the most significant impacts. The technology promises increased efficiency and productivity, with many decision-makers already implementing or considering its use in their operations. However, ethical concerns regarding consent, control, and compensation—termed the “3 C’s”—are paramount to avoid potential liabilities. The survey reveals broad agreement among M&E workers and consumers that permission should be required when generative AI is used to replicate styles or likenesses. The industry must navigate these changes carefully to balance the benefits of AI with the need to maintain high creative standards and ethical practices.
