Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a part of the telecommunications industry for some time, but its implementation at scale remains a significant challenge. During the Telco AI Forum virtual event, experts identified five main hurdles: the scale and pace of data generation, the associated costs, lack of clarity on AI’s business value, human and cultural factors, and the state of telco data. The vast amount of data generated by carriers, like Three UK, requires near-real-time processing, which is both costly and complex. Furthermore, without a clear business strategy and understanding of AI’s value, projects are prone to failure. The traditional skill set of telecom employees also poses a challenge, necessitating partnerships with tech companies to bridge the gap. Lastly, the data itself often needs significant preparation to be useful for AI models. Despite these hurdles, the industry sees AI as essential for future fully automated networks, even if achieving this goal remains years away.
