YouTube has implemented a new policy allowing individuals to request the removal of AI-generated or synthetic content that simulates their face or voice. This policy, quietly rolled out in June, is part of YouTube’s broader approach to responsible AI usage. Affected individuals can now report such content as a privacy violation rather than for being misleading. YouTube will evaluate claims based on various factors, including whether the content is disclosed as synthetic, uniquely identifies a person, or serves public interest as parody or satire. The platform will also consider the context, such as if the content features public figures or depicts sensitive behaviors.

Upon receiving a privacy complaint, the uploader has 48 hours to address it, or YouTube will review the content for possible removal. The policy emphasizes that removals differ from Community Guidelines strikes and do not automatically penalize the creator but can lead to actions against accounts with repeated violations. This nuanced approach aims to balance privacy needs with creative freedom and public interest, especially in an election year where AI-generated content could influence public opinion.
