Phil Schiller, Apple’s App Store chief and former marketing head, has been selected to represent Apple on OpenAI’s nonprofit board. Schiller will serve in a non-voting observer role, allowing him to attend board meetings but not to vote or act as a director. This move enables Schiller to gain insight into OpenAI’s operations as Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into iOS and macOS, enhancing Siri’s capabilities with advanced AI responses. This integration is expected to be rolled out later this year, pending user permission for ChatGPT engagement. Although no financial transactions are currently involved in the partnership, Apple may eventually receive a portion of ChatGPT subscription revenues generated through its platforms. This follows Microsoft’s similar non-voting observer position on the OpenAI board, potentially complicating collaborative discussions. Bloomberg highlights that it is uncommon for Apple executives to take board roles at partner companies, underscoring the significance of Schiller’s new position.
