Figma CEO Dylan Field announced that the company will temporarily disable its “Make Design” AI feature after accusations that it was copying Apple’s Weather app. The issue was raised by Andy Allen, founder of NotBoring Software, who found that the AI tool reproduced Apple’s Weather app designs when used as a design aid. Field denies that Figma’s tool heavily trained on existing apps, but acknowledged the need for better quality assurance. The AI feature, which generates UI layouts from text prompts, was introduced to help developers quickly prototype designs. However, the tool’s capability to mimic existing designs raised concerns in the design community about potential legal issues and job displacement. Field admitted the problem stemmed from underlying design systems and promised a full QA review before re-enabling the feature. The move underscores the challenges AI tools face in balancing innovation with ethical and legal standards.
