Figma recently launched a new generative AI tool called Make Designs, aimed at enabling users to quickly create app mockups. However, the tool was swiftly pulled from availability after it produced designs that bore an uncanny resemblance to Apple’s iOS weather app. Figma CEO Dylan Field took to social media to explain the removal, attributing the issue to the pressure he placed on the team to meet deadlines. The controversy centers around whether the AI was trained on existing app designs, including those of Apple. Figma CTO Kris Rasmussen clarified in an interview that the company did not train the AI models themselves, which are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Amazon’s Titan Image Generator G1. Instead, Figma used off-the-shelf models and a custom design system. The incident raises questions about the AI training practices of third-party models. Figma plans to review and enhance its design system to ensure greater variability and quality before re-releasing Make Designs. The company also introduced new AI training policies last week, allowing users to opt in or out of their content being used for training purposes. Despite the setback, Figma remains committed to refining its AI tools to better support professional designers.
