Google has been grappling with AI-generated spam content in its search results, particularly within Google News. This issue has been highlighted by instances where low-quality, AI-rewritten articles from less reputable sources appear alongside original content from well-known publications. In response to increasing spam, Google implemented substantial changes to its algorithm and spam policies in early 2023. By April, these updates reportedly led to a 45 percent reduction in low-quality, unoriginal content in search results. Despite these efforts, the problem persists. Experts like Lily Ray from Amsive note that AI-generated content often rehashes original articles, resulting in incoherent versions that still infiltrate search results. Syrus #Blog, a site employing AI tools for content creation, exemplifies this issue; despite minimal attribution, their articles mimic original content closely. Google maintains that their policies prohibit such practices and that they take action against non-compliant sites, but the prevalence of AI-generated spam remains a significant challenge.
