Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) is making waves in the educational sector by launching its new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Incubator and an AI Certificate program. The AI Incubator, located in the lower level of the Calkins Science Center, serves as a hub for workshops, presentations, and community networking. This initiative aims to provide free sessions, particularly targeting educators keen on incorporating AI into their curriculum. The incubator, developed in partnership with Intel and funded by the American Association of Community Colleges and Dell Technologies, is equipped with high-tech resources for community use, career growth, and educational development.
Simultaneously, GRCC is introducing a 23-credit AI Certificate program comprising seven courses, including a collaborative capstone project. This program is designed to be flexible, allowing students to complete it online and integrate it with other degrees or transfer credits to other institutions. The certificate is seen as a stepping-stone not only for current students but also for K-12 educators and students, as AI education is becoming increasingly relevant in the K-12 setting.
The open house event for the AI Incubator attracted business and education leaders who explored the potential applications of AI in their fields. The initiative is also seen as a significant resource for youth, with local programs like STEM Greenhouse incorporating AI education into their offerings. This move underscores the growing importance of AI in education and career planning, preparing students for a future where AI skills will be integral.
