News Corp’s global chief executive, Robert Thomson, has indicated that the company is contemplating legal action against at least one generative artificial intelligence firm, following a recent landmark deal with OpenAI. In a detailed memo to staff, Thomson outlined the company’s strategy towards generative AI, emphasizing its revolutionary impact and potential threat to journalism. The memo, which came to light through Capital Brief, followed a Q&A with News UK staff. Thomson was questioned about News Corp’s decision not to pursue legal action against AI companies, unlike The New York Times Company, which sued OpenAI. He disclosed that News Corp had considered joint action with The Times but refrained, criticizing The Times for seeking publicity with its lawsuit. Thomson mentioned ongoing collaborations with European publishers and other undisclosed entities and noted the importance of filing a well-prepared lawsuit. He confirmed that News Corp has several potential legal targets in its sights but stressed the need for thorough preparation to avoid a “sloppy suit.”
