The AI industry is witnessing a resurgence in funding, reminiscent of 2021, with companies like CoreWeave, Scale AI, and xAI raising billions of dollars in recent months. This influx of capital has boosted the industry’s overall deal-making, with the number and dollar amount of deals on the rise. According to Kyle Stanford, a research analyst at PitchBook, the decline in funding has bottomed out, and the industry is now experiencing a “Great Reawakening.” Venture capital investors, who previously advised startups to cut costs, are now encouraging them to “pour gas” on growth, particularly around artificial intelligence. The renewed interest in AI is attributed to the excitement around generative AI technology, which has sparked a frenzy of startup creation and funding. However, building AI requires enormous resources, with startups spending an average of 22% of their expenses on computing costs. Despite the costs, AI is creating efficiencies, and startups are growing faster than they otherwise would have.
