Despite vows to label AI-generated content, Meta and X failed to flag political posts created using artificial intelligence, targeted at the French parliamentary and European Parliament elections. French far-right parties, including the National Rally, openly admitted to using AI-generated images and videos, citing cost-effectiveness and the blurred lines between authenticity and inauthenticity. The parties utilized AI software like Midjourney, which can produce lifelike images, raising concerns about the impact of AI-generated content on the political landscape. While Meta claimed it’s not yet possible to identify all AI-generated content, X remained silent on the matter. This lack of accountability raises serious questions about the role of social media in shaping political discourse and the need for stricter regulations.
