The 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) is set to kick off in Shanghai, China, with over 1,500 AI-related products and systems on display. The conference’s theme, “Governing AI for Good and for All,” highlights China’s efforts to lead the creation of vital AI standards amidst US sanctions and rising tensions between Beijing and Washington. Premier Li Qiang will deliver the opening speech, emphasizing China’s commitment to AI development. The conference comes on the heels of a diplomatic win for Beijing, as the UN General Assembly adopted a China-led resolution calling for a “free, open, inclusive and non-discriminatory” business environment for AI development. With over 500 enterprises participating, including major tech companies, this year’s conference is expected to showcase China’s innovations in AI and narrow the gap with the US in technology development. In my opinion, this conference is a significant step forward for China in asserting its dominance in the AI sector and setting the tone for future development.
