The High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence in Africa brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the opportunities and risks of AI in the African context. The two-day event resulted in the adoption of the African Consensus on Artificial Intelligence, a call to action with three founding principles: a common framework for global and inclusive AI governance, harnessing AI for the public sector and African common good, and ensuring ethical and human rights-based development and use of AI. The recommendations from the discussions highlight the need for building infrastructure, preventing brain drain, creating African language datasets, and promoting digital literacy for all. The forum’s outcome is a significant step towards ensuring that AI development in Africa is inclusive, ethical, and benefits all. My take is that this is a crucial moment for Africa to take control of its AI destiny and UNESCO’s partnership with AI Movement to train 5,000 African civil servants is a great start.
