The latest report from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reveals that China-based inventors are leading the charge in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) patent filings, with over 38,000 inventions between 2014 and 2023, six times more than the US. This dominance is particularly striking, given that GenAI has the potential to transform industries such as life sciences, manufacturing, and transportation. The report highlights the rapid growth of GenAI, with over 25% of all patents filed in 2023 alone, and over 45% of all scientific papers published in the same year. The top 10 GenAI patent applicants include tech giants like Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba Group, while image and video data dominate GenAI patents, followed by text and speech/music. As GenAI continues to spread across industries, it’s clear that China is positioning itself as a leader in this revolutionary technology. My take? The US and other countries need to step up their game if they want to remain competitive in the GenAI landscape.
