French far-right parties, National Rally and Reconquest, are leveraging AI-generated content to influence voters ahead of the parliamentary elections. Using MidJourney, these parties have created 23 AI images across 81 social media posts, focusing on divisive topics like immigration, Muslims, and the European Union. Although the volume of AI content is relatively low, it marks a significant shift in political campaigning. AI Forensics’ research suggests that these posts are just the tip of the iceberg. The content, not flagged as AI-generated by platforms like Meta and X, raises ethical concerns despite not breaking any laws. The platforms have policies requiring such labeling, but compliance is lacking. This trend underscores the need for more robust regulations to ensure transparency and protect democratic processes. Meanwhile, the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act aims to curb the dominance of tech giants like Apple and Meta, promoting fair competition. Fiona Scott Morton, a Yale academic, highlights the urgency for swift and effective enforcement of these rules. With the upcoming global elections, the role of AI and the responsibility of tech companies in safeguarding democracy are under scrutiny.
