This year’s Bucheon International Fantasy Film Festival (BIFAN) in South Korea introduces a new category for films created with artificial intelligence. Over 11 days, more than 200 global feature and short films will be screened, with 15 titles vying in the AI competition. The festival’s overarching theme is AI, complemented by a three-day AI international conference. Festival director Shin Chul believes generative AI can democratize filmmaking, emphasizing imagination over budget. The AI film entries will be judged on artistry, technical skill, and thematic depth. Notable films include Hansl Von Kwon’s ‘One More Pumpkin,’ made in just five days and previously awarded at the Dubai AI Film Festival. Other nominees are Park Sungwon’s “Under the Sign of the Moon,” Bae Junwon’s “Snowfall,” and Cha Sehwan’s “Final Scene.” The jury, including industry experts like Ferdi Alici and Kim Tae-yong, will award a prize of KRW15 million ($11,000). The AI conference will feature keynotes from distinguished figures like Professor Lee Jinjoon and Cannes NEXT head Sten-Khristian Saluveer. This marks the first instance of an AI film category in a major film festival, reflecting the growing integration of AI in the cinematic world.
