Anterior, a healthcare technology startup founded by clinicians, has secured $20 million in Series A funding to address inefficiencies in U.S. healthcare administration. The funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and supported by Sequoia Capital, aims to enhance Anterior’s AI-driven solutions. Founded by Dr. Abdel Mahmoud, Anterior uses artificial intelligence to streamline prior authorization processes for health insurers. By acting as a “copilot” for nurses, the AI system can potentially double or triple productivity. The technology integrates narrow AI systems with large language models to handle unstructured medical data, enhancing efficiency in administrative tasks. Anterior’s approach involves structuring medical records, converting clinical criteria into executable logic, and applying clinical reasoning, verified by human nurses. While focused on prior authorizations, Anterior envisions applications in care management, payment integrity, and claims adjudication. Half of Anterior’s team comprises clinicians, offering a unique blend of clinical and technical expertise. The funding arrives amid industry staffing shortages and high administrative costs, positioning Anterior to scale its operations and expand its AI-powered solutions across more health plans. The company aims to navigate regulatory challenges and build trust among healthcare providers and insurers, ensuring accuracy, safety, and transparency in AI-driven healthcare decision-making.
