The Japanese government’s recent white paper reveals that companies in Japan are significantly behind their US and European counterparts in adopting generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Only 46.8% of Japanese companies use generative AI, compared to 84.7% in the US and 72.7% in Germany. While Japanese companies mainly use generative AI for simple tasks like taking meeting minutes and creating emails, companies in the US and Europe utilize the technology for a broader range of operations, including customer services. Despite this, over 70% of Japanese firms believe that generative AI will have a positive impact on their operations, making them more efficient. However, they are also concerned about the risks associated with its use, such as copyright infringement and data breaches. The white paper also highlights the potential demand for generative AI in Japan, with 70% of individuals expressing interest in using the technology in the future. Additionally, the report calls for measures to address the spread of fake online advertisements and misinformation, citing the example of social media posts spreading unconfirmed information about a recent earthquake in Japan.
