Kyrgyzstan leverages artificial intelligence to address two critical challenges: predicting glacial lake outbursts and improving tuberculosis diagnosis. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) supports these initiatives, which demonstrate the potential of AI in disaster risk management and healthcare.
The first project focuses on monitoring Kyrgyzstan’s 2,000+ high-mountain lakes, with 368 considered prone to breakthroughs. Key points include:
- AI analyzes satellite imagery to predict rising water levels
- The system automatically identifies lakes and compares data with previous years
- Specialists verify the AI-generated information through field studies or helicopter surveys
- Other countries have expressed interest in adopting this technology
The second initiative involves using AI in tuberculosis detection:
- Portable X-ray machines with AI capabilities have been installed in regional TB centers
- The equipment can diagnose lung pathologies quickly and accurately
- The devices can examine up to 300 people per day and detect various pulmonary conditions
These projects showcase the broader trend of digitalization in Kyrgyzstan, with the government developing advanced public service delivery systems. The UNDP emphasizes the importance of a systemic approach to strengthen the digital ecosystem, ensuring AI and other digital solutions promote inclusiveness and bridge the digital divide.
