Etsy has introduced new labeling requirements for sellers to address the influx of generic and AI-generated products on its platform. The revised policy aims to provide clarity on the level of human involvement in each item, marking the first time Etsy has directly addressed artificial intelligence in its seller guidelines.
The new “Creativity Standards” require sellers to classify their products using specific labels:
- “Handpicked” for vintage goods
- “Sourced” for craft and party supplies
- “Handmade” for physical products made by sellers
- “Designed” for items created using AI tools or outside production partners
Etsy is embracing AI technology while setting clear boundaries. Sellers can use AI tools to create artwork but must disclose this in their listing descriptions. The platform now prohibits the sale of AI prompts, and these listings will be removed. Etsy’s CEO has emphasized the company’s commitment to “keeping commerce human” and has increased efforts to remove listings that violate its Handmade policy.
This policy update reflects Etsy’s attempt to balance technological advancements with its core values of human creativity and craftsmanship. By implementing these changes, Etsy aims to maintain its unique position in the e-commerce landscape while adapting to evolving creative processes and consumer expectations.
