Bridging Technology and Society
The Center for Community-Engaged Artificial Intelligence (CEAI) and the Connolly Alexander Institute for Data Science (CAIDS) at Tulane University have launched a summer research program aimed at developing human-centered AI solutions with a strong emphasis on social impact. This initiative seeks to create AI technologies that are not only technologically advanced but also socially responsible and impactful.
Key Aspects of the Program
- Focuses on creating AI solutions that address real-world challenges and promote equity
- Involves communities in all stages of the AI process, from design to deployment
- Supports research into socially beneficial, inclusive, effective, fair, transparent, and accountable AI technologies
- Awarded $10,000 to each of three groundbreaking research projects
Impactful Research Projects
The program has funded three diverse projects:
1. LandmarkAI: Using AI to identify unregistered national historic landmarks and potential threats to their preservation
2. Chocó Forest Watch: Leveraging AI to support local conservation efforts in Ecuador’s biodiversity hotspot
3. AI-Enhanced Support for Young Adults with Substance Use Disorders: Integrating AI into existing interventions to improve outcomes and accessibility
Shaping the Future of AI
This program represents a significant step towards creating AI technologies that are deeply attuned to the needs and values of diverse communities. By fostering collaboration between technology and society, CEAI and CAIDS are paving the way for AI solutions that not only advance technological capabilities but also address pressing societal challenges. This approach ensures that AI development remains grounded in real-world applications and contributes meaningfully to the public good.
