Overview of the Initiative
Brazil’s central bank, Banco Central do Brasil (BCB), is setting up a new hub focused on data science and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative, named the ‘Centre of Excellence in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence,’ will operate under the IT department. The centre aims to enhance the use and development of AI and data science within the central bank. It will start functioning on September 1, following the publication of its governing resolution on August 15.
Key Features of the Centre
- The centre will propose guidelines for the ethical and safe use of AI in software services.
- It will evaluate the requirements for generative AI tools in the bank’s operations.
- Training programs will be developed for staff to build expertise in AI and data science.
- Technical leaders with AI and data science skills will lead the centre, along with additional members approved by their supervisors.
Importance of the Initiative
This move is significant as central banks globally are increasingly recognizing the importance of AI. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has highlighted that AI can improve how central banks operate, helping them analyze vast data for better economic predictions. By establishing this centre, Brazil is positioning itself to leverage AI technology effectively, ensuring it remains competitive and capable of addressing modern economic challenges.
