Overview of the Initiative

NC State University is launching an innovative program that combines artificial intelligence (AI) with plant sciences to create a new generation of leaders in agriculture. The National Science Foundation has awarded a $3 million grant to support this initiative, named GRAD-AID for Ag. This program will train graduate students to tackle pressing agricultural challenges through a comprehensive curriculum that fuses AI with plant science. The first cohort of students is set to begin in the summer of 2025, with a total of 21 students participating in two cohorts.

Key Components of the Program

  • The program will involve hands-on experience, with students spending a week in Eastern North Carolina to engage with farmers and learn about real-world agricultural challenges.
  • Participants will take courses in statistics, AI literacy, and the ethical implications of AI, alongside workshops and guest lectures.
  • A capstone project will be a highlight, where students collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to find solutions to complex agricultural issues.
  • The project aims to bridge the gap between lab research and field applications, ensuring that scientific advancements translate effectively into agricultural practices.

Significance of the Program

This initiative is crucial for addressing the growing challenges in agriculture, such as climate change, resource scarcity, and food security. By fostering collaboration between plant scientists and AI experts, the program aims to create a workforce that can effectively tackle these issues. The partnership with Fayetteville State University also emphasizes diversity in agricultural sciences, ensuring a wide range of perspectives and solutions. Ultimately, this program seeks to enhance innovation in agriculture, making it more sustainable and resilient for future generations.
