Overview of the Initiative
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly changing various fields, including education. In response, Concordia and McGill libraries have collaborated to create a training program aimed at enhancing faculty understanding of GenAI. This initiative is designed to help professors engage in meaningful discussions and further explore the use of GenAI in their work. Faculty members have expressed a strong interest in GenAI but often feel they lack the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively utilize it. The training program addresses this gap by providing essential information and resources.
Key Features of the Program
- Nine short online micromodules have been developed, focusing on foundational topics related to GenAI.
- The modules cover essential subjects such as the definition of GenAI, types of tools available, and their potential uses in teaching and research.
- Each micromodule takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and is designed to be interactive and engaging.
- The content is openly licensed, allowing other institutions to adopt the modules for their faculty training needs.
Significance of the Program
This collaborative effort highlights the importance of equipping educators with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of AI technology. By providing targeted, accessible training, this program aims to foster a shared understanding among faculty, enabling them to integrate GenAI into their academic practices effectively. The initiative not only benefits the participating universities but also sets a precedent for other institutions to follow, promoting a wider understanding of GenAI in higher education.
