Overview of the Event
Penn State’s Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CSRAI) is launching a unique competition called “Diagnose-a-thon.” Scheduled for November 11-17, this virtual event invites the university community to explore the capabilities and risks associated with generative AI in medical diagnostics. Participants will use popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini to generate health-related diagnoses based on various scenarios. The goal is to highlight both the strengths and potential dangers of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare.
Key Details of the Competition
- The challenge is open to all Penn State members with a valid email.
- Participants can submit entries in three tracks: patient, medical professional, and out-of-the-box scenarios.
- A panel of physicians will evaluate submissions, awarding prizes for the highest number of verifiable AI-generated diagnoses.
- Significant cash prizes will be awarded, including $1,000 for the most harmful diagnosis if acted upon.
Significance of the Competition
This event is crucial as it sheds light on the dual nature of generative AI tools in healthcare. While they can enhance efficiency, they also pose risks like misinformation and inequality. By identifying these aspects, the competition aims to foster responsible AI use in medical settings. Ultimately, it encourages research and development of AI solutions that prioritize ethical considerations, paving the way for a more socially responsible approach to artificial intelligence in healthcare.
