Overview of Innovation at Wharton

Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania has a rich history of integrating technology into education. Recently, it has taken a significant step by adopting generative AI to improve student learning. Starting in autumn 2024, Wharton will introduce a virtual teaching assistant (TA) that will provide immediate responses to students’ course-related questions. This initiative aims to fill the gaps in communication that often arise in traditional learning environments.

Key Features of the Virtual TA Project

  • The virtual TA will be accessible through Wharton’s learning management system, allowing students to engage in real-time Q&A.
  • It will provide not only answers but also relevant reference materials, such as recorded lectures, to enhance understanding.
  • The project was developed in collaboration with AWS, utilizing advanced AI technologies to ensure information accuracy and reliability.
  • The initial rollout will occur in Professor Fader’s executive MBA class, serving as a pilot for future applications across the school.

Significance of the Initiative

This project represents a pivotal moment in educational technology. By implementing generative AI, Wharton aims to transform how students access information and support. The virtual TA is designed to reduce the workload on human TAs, allowing them to focus on more personalized student interactions. Additionally, this initiative sets a precedent for other institutions to explore similar AI applications, potentially revolutionizing higher education. As Wharton continues to adapt and evolve its curriculum with technology, it positions itself as a leader in innovative educational practices.
