Innovative Education in AI and Operations Research
A new PhD certificate program at USC is set to revolutionize the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and operations research (OR). Supported by a generous $2.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation, this initiative aims to create a new generation of leaders who can effectively merge these two critical disciplines. The program is a collaboration between the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science. It focuses on training students to tackle complex decision-making challenges by combining the strengths of AI and OR.
Key Features of the Program
- The program will enroll at least 38 PhD students over its first five years, with specialized fellowships available.
- Students will take four new graduate courses that blend AI and OR technologies, incorporating ethics to ensure responsible deployment of decision-support systems.
- Workshops will enhance non-technical skills like communication and teamwork, essential for future leaders in the field.
- Research opportunities will be provided through partnerships with leading USC research centers, promoting real-world applications of the learned concepts.
Significance of the Initiative
This program is crucial for advancing the integration of AI and OR, fields that, while complementary, have historically faced challenges in collaboration. By fostering an interdisciplinary approach, the ORAI certificate aims to prepare students to tackle pressing decision-making problems in various sectors. The initiative not only enhances USC’s educational offerings but also sets a precedent for other institutions to follow, potentially transforming how these disciplines intersect in the future.
