Introducing Copilot Chat

Microsoft has launched a new pay-as-you-go plan called Copilot Chat, targeting corporate customers. This offering bundles several AI-powered productivity features for Microsoft 365, but not all of them. The plan is built on OpenAI’s GPT-4o AI model and allows users to ask business-related questions, create workflow automations, and generate images. While these capabilities were previously available in Microsoft 365 Copilot, the new plan offers more flexible pricing options for businesses.

Key Features and Pricing

  • Copilot Chat uses GPT-4o for queries and maintains a similar chat experience to the full Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • Users can upload files to Copilot Chat for summarizing Word documents or analyzing Excel spreadsheets.
  • Pricing is based on message consumption, with different rates for classic answers, generative answers, and Microsoft Graph access.
  • One message is equivalent to 1 cent, with generative answers costing 2 cents and Microsoft Graph access costing 30 cents.
  • Businesses can use their Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) for Copilot Chat usage.

Impact and Future Outlook

The introduction of Copilot Chat reflects Microsoft’s efforts to make its AI-powered tools more accessible to businesses of various sizes. This move comes as the full Microsoft 365 Copilot has faced challenges, with some organizations finding it inefficient, costly, and insecure. A recent Gartner survey revealed that only 3.3% of IT leaders reported significant value from Copilot. Despite these hurdles, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized the company’s focus on AI model-forward applications for 2025, aiming to reshape all application categories. This new offering may help Microsoft attract more businesses to its AI ecosystem and potentially drive adoption of its full Microsoft 365 Copilot service in the future.
