Powering the Future
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has made significant strides in securing energy sources for its AI data centers. The company has entered into agreements with three nuclear power firms: TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra. These partnerships aim to supply electricity for the Prometheus AI data center, which is under construction in New Albany, Ohio. This facility is projected to be a 1-gigawatt cluster of multiple data center buildings, expected to begin operations this year.
Key Details of the Agreements
- The deals will support up to 6.6 gigawatts of clean energy by 2035.
- Meta’s partnership with TerraPower includes funding for two new Natrium units, producing up to 690 megawatts, with delivery anticipated as early as 2032.
- The company will also acquire over 2.1 gigawatts from two operational Vistra nuclear plants in Ohio, along with expansions at these plants and a third in Pennsylvania.
- Oklo’s collaboration will help develop a 1.2 gigawatt power campus in Pike County, Ohio, specifically for Meta’s data centers.
The Bigger Picture
These nuclear power agreements are crucial for Meta’s commitment to sustainable energy. They not only enhance the reliability of the energy grid but also strengthen the U.S. nuclear supply chain. By investing in clean energy, Meta is creating jobs and supporting the construction and operation of American power plants. This move reflects a growing trend among tech giants to prioritize renewable energy sources, especially as they expand their data center operations to meet rising demands.
