The updated Google Play guidelines are taking a firm stance against generative AI apps that promote harmful and offensive content, including deepfake “undressing” apps and those that produce graphic images. The new policy requires developers to build in safeguards against prohibited content, including child exploitation and deceptive behavior. Developers must also provide in-app reporting mechanisms for users to flag inappropriate content and rigorously test their AI models. The rules apply to apps that generate AI content, including chatbots, image generators, and audio-spoofing apps. This move is part of a broader effort to combat the spread of misinformation and nonconsensual use of people’s likenesses. Google’s decision comes on the heels of a White House AI directive calling on tech companies to do more to prohibit the spread of deepfakes.
