Amazon has introduced a cutting-edge technology, dubbed Project P.I., which utilizes generative AI and computer vision to identify damaged or defective products before they reach customers. This innovation aims to reduce unwanted returns and improve customer satisfaction. Since May 2022, Project P.I. has been operational in several North American fulfillment centers and is set to expand to additional sites throughout 2024. The system works by scanning products through an imaging tunnel, detecting defects, and isolating them for further investigation. Amazon associates then review and determine the product’s eligibility for resale, donation, or alternative use. The technology also enables Amazon to “learn” from customer feedback, identifying the root cause of defects and implementing preventive measures. This development is expected to benefit third-party sellers who utilize Amazon’s FBA fulfillment service, providing them with accessible data on defects and enabling them to rectify errors. By leveraging AI and computer vision, Amazon is poised to revolutionize its quality control processes, enhancing customer trust and loyalty.
