Two prominent French media professional groups, the Alliance of General Information Press (Apig) and the Syndicate of Magazine Press Publishers (SEPM), have called upon artificial intelligence companies, such as OpenAI, to enter into paid negotiations for the use of content from their 800 member publications. The appeal highlights the dissatisfaction with the unauthorized and uncompensated use of protected intellectual property by AI entities. These organizations have reached out to nearly 25 leading generative AI companies, seeking to discuss the usage of press publications and establish a transparent, fair agreement ensuring authorized access to these materials. As AI models increasingly rely on vast datasets, including press content, there is a rising imperative to compensate media sources fairly. While some global media have achieved agreements, others are pursuing legal action to protect their copyrights. This issue raises significant questions about the ethics and legality of AI systems using copyrighted text, highlighting the need for fair valuation and ethical AI development practices.
