The U.S. government has initiated antitrust investigations into Microsoft Corp. and Nvidia Corp., two of the world’s most valuable companies, over their dominance in the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector. Microsoft has invested over $13 billion into its partnership with OpenAI, integrating its generative-AI technology into its products like Bing, Edge, and Windows. Nvidia, known for its AI semiconductors, faces scrutiny for its chip allocation practices, which some argue give it excessive market power. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will investigate Microsoft’s ties with OpenAI, while the Department of Justice (DOJ) will focus on Nvidia’s control over AI chips. Additionally, the FTC is probing whether Microsoft failed to notify authorities about its $650 million deal with Inflection AI. The DOJ and FTC reached this division of responsibilities after six months of negotiations. Both agencies are also looking into broader AI market practices, including Microsoft’s cloud services and Nvidia’s chip distribution. The outcomes of these probes could significantly shape the future of AI regulation and competition.
