Healthcare providers need to build consumer trust in generative AI to fully leverage its potential, according to a Deloitte report. The report, based on a survey of over 2,000 U.S. adults, reveals that consumer use of generative AI for health-related queries has slightly decreased from 40% in 2023 to 37% in 2024. Growing distrust in AI-provided information is a key factor. To foster trust, hospitals should engage in transparent conversations, secure patient consent, and train AI models on internal medical data. Millennials and Baby Boomers show the largest increase in distrust, with concerns stemming from experiences with public AI models like ChatGPT, which sometimes provide inaccurate health information. Experts suggest educating patients on AI’s role in augmenting, not replacing, healthcare, emphasizing the benefits and addressing data protection concerns. Strong provider-patient relationships and clear communication about AI’s use and benefits are critical. Developing industry standards for patient education and consent related to AI could further enhance trust and adoption.
