The rapid development of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked concerns about the spread of misinformation. While AI has the potential to revolutionize productivity, it also poses a significant threat to the dissemination of accurate information. Amanda Williamson, AI lead at Deloitte and senior lecturer at Waikato University, warns that the ability of AI to create convincing misinformation is a major concern. With the rise of deepfakes and fraud, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to discern trustworthy sources from fraudulent ones. Williamson emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, urging individuals to fact-check information and not blindly trust AI-generated content. She also highlights the need for transparency in AI, advocating for “white box” AI that explains its thinking, rather than “black box” AI that operates without accountability. As AI continues to evolve, it’s essential to approach its outputs with a healthy dose of skepticism.
