U.S. military researchers are calling on industry experts to develop methods to ensure the performance and accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) in future aerospace and defense applications. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has launched the Artificial Intelligence Quantified (AIQ) project, aiming to create a framework for assessing and guaranteeing AI capabilities. Current approaches to evaluating AI are largely ad hoc and lack rigorous theoretical foundations, making it difficult to ensure safe and reliable operation of autonomous systems. The AIQ program will explore mathematical methods combined with advances in measurement and modeling to provide guaranteed quantification of AI capabilities. The initiative will address three levels of AI assessment: specific problem level, classes of problem level, and natural class level. The program is divided into two 18-month phases focusing on specific problems and the composition of classes and architectures, respectively. Interested parties must submit abstracts by June 25, 2024, and full proposals by August 13, 2024, via the DARPA Broad Agency Announcement Tool.
