The use of artificial intelligence to generate song lyrics and poetry has sparked a fascinating debate about the nature of creativity. In an experiment, I used AI websites to produce songs and poems on various topics, including freedom, mourning, and redwood trees. The results were impressive, with the AI programs quickly generating rhymes and verses in different styles. However, this exercise also raised important questions about the value of human creativity in the face of AI’s efficiency.
While AI can produce adequate products quickly, it lacks the soulful agency of human intelligence. Human creativity is not just about generating quick outcomes, but about the agonizing care and spiritual self-expression that occurs in art and thought. Human beings create art for various reasons, including self-expression, worship, and personal satisfaction. The process of creating is what gives art its value, not just the final product.
The use of AI in creative endeavors raises important questions about the role of humans in the creative process. While AI can be useful for generating commodities like greeting card rhymes or ad copy, it cannot replace the human experience and soul that goes into creating art. As humans, we linger and dwell, dream and pine, and give voice to our souls through our creative pursuits.
