The Chinese military has unveiled a new robotic canine companion for its soldiers, equipped with a machine gun strapped to its back, sparking concerns among international observers. The robot dog, showcased during the Golden Dragon 24 joint military exercises with Cambodia, is designed to conduct reconnaissance, identify enemies, and strike targets, potentially replacing human soldiers in urban combat operations. This is not the first time China has shown off an armed robot dog, with previous demonstrations featuring quadrupedal ground vehicles affixed with various combat systems, including smoke grenades and loitering munitions. The US military is also experimenting with weaponized robot dogs, outfitting them with standard-issue rifles and even the M72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon. While American defense officials emphasize that the development is purely experimental, it may not be long before the US military considers adopting armed robot canines for combat, potentially sparking a new era of robotic warfare.
