The legal profession is facing a growing divide in the adoption of generative AI, with larger firms leading the charge and smaller firms struggling to keep up. A recent talk to a group of trial lawyers revealed a lack of familiarity with AI tools, with many admitting to ignoring the technology due to lack of knowledge and resources. This divide is further exacerbated by the development of AI products catering to larger firms, leaving smaller firms at a disadvantage. The cost of AI tools and the lack of innovation staff in smaller firms are also contributing factors to this imbalance. To bridge this gap, bar associations and vendors catering to smaller firms must step up to provide resources, training, and education on the practical applications of generative AI. Ultimately, it is up to lawyers in smaller firms to take the initiative to explore and familiarize themselves with AI technology.
