The latest Generative AI Global Benchmark Study by Lucidworks reveals a stark reality – despite being leaders in AI and growth initiatives, only 25% of planned AI projects have been fully implemented across all industries. Retail companies, in particular, have fewer AI deployment delays compared to other global industries, but 34% of them feel they are falling behind their peers. The study also highlights concerns around AI, with implementation costs being a significant worry for 64% of retailers. This is likely to impact AI spending plans, with only 64% of retailers planning to increase AI spending in the next 12 months, a significant drop from 92% in 2023.

In my opinion, the study’s findings are a wake-up call for retailers to reassess their AI strategies and prioritize implementation to reap the benefits of AI. Despite the challenges, retailers are still rapidly adopting AI and experiencing fewer delays than other industries, which is a positive trend. However, they need to strike a balance between reaping the rewards of AI, managing costs, and mitigating potential risks.
