The United Kingdom has emerged as the leading hub for generative AI startups in Europe and Israel, according to a recent study by venture capital firm Accel. The research analyzed 221 GenAI startups and found that 30% were founded in the UK, followed by Germany at 14% and Israel at 13%. France and the Netherlands rounded out the top five with 11% and 6% respectively. The UK’s strong position in AI is attributed to its top universities, its history with AI companies like DeepMind, and investments from major U.S. tech companies. Despite the UK’s dominance in startup numbers, French GenAI companies lead in funding, raising $2.29 billion compared to the UK’s $1.15 billion. The study also revealed that many GenAI startup founders have backgrounds in major tech companies or academic institutions, with a quarter educated at prestigious UK universities. Globally, GenAI startups raised over $25 billion in 2023, with expectations of reaching $45 billion in 2024.
