This new academic survey aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how artificial intelligence is impacting students’ daily learning experiences in Scotland. Led by the University of Edinburgh, the research will explore how high schoolers use AI in their work, helping teachers better support responsible AI use for learning. The study’s findings will help ensure Scottish education prepares students for an AI-driven workforce, where they will be expected to possess critical AI literacy skills. The survey will delve into students’ use of generative AI, their understanding of “hallucinations,” and the policies schools have in place for AI use. The researchers hope to tackle the digital divide, where students without access to AI tools at home may miss out on essential learning skills. By understanding how learners use AI tools, the study aims to develop a framework for AI literacy, meeting learners halfway and acknowledging AI’s presence in their digital lives.
