Meta has finally made its Llama-3-powered AI chatbot available to all users in India, after months of testing during the general elections. The chatbot, which supports only English for now, can be accessed through the search bar in Meta’s apps or the meta.ai website. With this rollout, Meta is bringing its AI technology to India’s massive user base of 500 million WhatsApp users and hundreds of millions of users of its other apps. The chatbot’s functionality is similar to other AI models, allowing users to ask for suggestions, plan workouts, write emails, and summarize text. In Instagram, it can suggest Reels to watch based on search queries, while on Facebook, it can provide information related to posts. However, concerns remain about the chatbot’s biases, such as adding turbans when generating images of Indian men, which Meta claims to be constantly updating and improving. As Google recently released its Gemini app in India with support for nine local languages, Meta’s limited language support may hinder its adoption in the country. Overall, this rollout marks a significant step for Meta in bringing AI technology to the masses, but it remains to be seen how users will respond to its limitations.
