Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, has seemingly softened his stance on Artificial Intelligence (AI), a technology he once likened to nuclear weapons in terms of its potentially catastrophic risks. In a recent interview at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Musk sounded more optimistic about AI, stating that it will “most likely be good” and that technology will help humans achieve their goals. While he still acknowledges the potential 20% chance of AI leading to something terrible, he encouraged the audience to “look on the bright side” and focus on the potential benefits of AI, such as universal high income and abundance of goods and services. This shift in tone is notable, especially given Musk’s previous warnings about AI safety and his backing of a letter demanding a six-month pause on AI development. As someone who has been vocal about AI risks, Musk’s newfound optimism is intriguing, and it will be interesting to see how this stance evolves in the future.
