Amazon is secretly working on an AI chatbot called Metis, which directly competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The project, codenamed after the Greek goddess of wisdom, is designed to be accessed from a web browser and is powered by an internal Amazon AI model called Olympus. Metis gives text and image-based answers in a conversational manner, shares links to the source of its responses, suggests follow-up queries, and generates images. Amazon wants Metis to use an AI technique called retrieval-augmented generation to generate more up-to-date responses. The goal is to make Metis a more powerful AI assistant that can perform complex tasks, such as planning a vacation itinerary or booking a flight. However, with Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI already having their own AI assistants, Amazon is playing catch-up in the AI race. The company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, is directly involved in the project, which is currently being tested internally. The tentative launch date for Metis is September, but some team members feel that Amazon is already late to the AI chatbot game.
