The Department of Homeland Security has taken a significant step forward in its artificial intelligence agenda with the hiring of an initial cohort of 10 AI experts to join its new AI Corps. The move is part of the department’s ambitious plan to harness AI to advance its mission, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stating that they are “leaning forward” in their use of AI. The 10 experts, who bring a range of experience from both the public and private sectors, will help DHS pursue its AI agenda, which includes piloting projects in areas such as countering fentanyl networks, combating child sexual exploitation and abuse, and delivering immigration services. Mayorkas has expressed enthusiasm about the level of interest in joining the corps, with over 6,000 “expressions of interest” received so far. The department plans to hire a total of 50 experts to the AI Corps this year, with a model similar to the U.S. Digital Service, where experts are “farmed out” across the department to help advance specific projects.
