EvolutionaryScale, an AI research lab founded by former Meta engineers, has announced the launch of ESM3, a groundbreaking multimodal and generative language model designed to create novel proteins. The model promises to revolutionize the field of synthetic biology by making biology programmable. ESM3 was able to generate a novel green fluorescent protein, a feat that would have taken nature 500 million years to accomplish. The model was trained on 2.78 billion natural proteins and 771 billion unique tokens, enabling it to reason across three fundamental biological properties: sequence, structure, and function. This allows scientists to design proteins with unprecedented precision, potentially solving significant global challenges such as plastic pollution and disease. In addition to launching ESM3, EvolutionaryScale has raised $142 million in seed funding and open-sourced the smallest version of the model to accelerate research. However, the real-world impact of ESM3 remains to be seen, as it awaits broader applications in pharmaceutical development and other industries.
