OpenAI initially announced that its advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT would roll out to paying users within weeks of its May demo. However, the company has since postponed the launch due to unresolved issues. In a Discord post, OpenAI stated that they aimed to release the feature in alpha to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users by late June, but delays have pushed this to July. Key improvements are still needed, including better content detection and refusal capabilities, user experience enhancements, and infrastructure scaling to support millions of users while maintaining real-time responses. OpenAI plans a phased deployment, starting with a limited user group for feedback. The general release might be delayed until the fall, pending internal safety and reliability checks. This delay does not affect the rollout of new video and screen-sharing features, designed to solve math problems and explain device settings. These features are now available across smartphones and desktop clients, including macOS. Controversy arose from the similarity of the default “Sky” voice to Scarlett Johansson’s, leading to her legal inquiry and OpenAI’s subsequent removal of the voice.
