Otis Chandler, co-founder of Goodreads, is back with a new venture named Smashing, an AI and community-powered content recommendation app. Unlike Goodreads, which focuses on books, Smashing aims to uncover and recommend a variety of online content including news articles, blog posts, podcasts, and social media. The app, now in an invite-only beta, addresses the fragmented media landscape and declining publisher traffic by encouraging users to explore valuable content directly on publishers’ sites. Chandler’s inspiration for Smashing came from his own frustration with finding quality content while training for a triathlon. Teaming up with Greg Veen, Chandler designed Smashing to help users follow their interests more efficiently by allowing them to submit and vote on content, with AI assisting in content discovery and summarization. Smashing aims to create a community that surfaces the internet’s hidden gems, driving traffic back to original content sources rather than replacing them.
