Character.AI, a startup backed by a16z, has taken a significant leap in AI-human interaction by introducing a calling feature that allows users to converse with AI characters over phone calls. This feature, which supports multiple languages, has already seen massive adoption with over 3 million users making more than 20 million calls during the testing phase. The calling feature can be useful for language practice, mock interviews, and even role-playing games. Users can seamlessly switch between calling and texting, and even interrupt the AI character’s speaking with a “Tap to interrupt” option. This development comes on the heels of Character.AI’s launch of Character Voices, which enables users to create their own voices for AI characters, resulting in a library of over 1 million voices. While some users have complained about their characters’ changing personalities, the company attributes this to a test rather than a major change. With Google reportedly working on its own chatbot platform to rival Character.AI, the AI conversational space is heating up.
